Fundraising Outreach Material : Introduction - How we use the fund raised

Every year in November and December, the Wikimedia Foundation launches an annual giving campaign to raise the money that’s needed to support the Wikimedia Foundation, our Chapters worldwide, and the projects used by millions of people every day, including Wikipedia.

Since in 2009, Wikimedia Hong Kong has joined the Wikimedia Foundation on the global fundraising effort. Half of revenue from Hong Kong will go to the Wikimedia Foundation. By donating to Wikimedia Hong Kong during the annual fundraising period, you are supporting the local free cultural movement, as well as the global development of Wikimedia.

Deductibility

Wikimedia Hong Kong is one of the Charitable Institutions of a Public Character exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

Individual and business donors within the Hong Kong SAR, who are chargeable to salaries tax, personal assessment or profits tax can claim deduction for the aggregate of approved charitable donation up to 35% of the assessable income or profits, as the case may be, in the basis period of a year of assessment. Such aggregate must not be less than $100. (Sections 16D and 26C of the Inland Revenue Ordinance)

The Treasury of Wikimedia Hong Kong will issue a receipt for each donation not less than $100, according to the law as your proof for tax deduction. Such receipt may also apply to gifts the Chapter receives. The gifts will be treated as a donation of the same value to the Chapter.  

Acknowledgements

Both the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Hong Kong deeply appreciate donations, and are willing to acknowledge donors whenever we can. Locally, we list all the names of benefactor who make a donation of $150 HKD or more, on our official Website. For benefactors who donate $500 HKD or above, donator's name will be shown on our printed Newsletter and Annual Report.

The Wikimedia Foundation will also list the Major Benefactors (who donate more than $50,000 USD), Leading donors (who donate $5,0000 to $14,999 USD) and Sustaining donors (who donate $1,000 to $4,999 USD) on the Official Website and Annual Report.
